. Q1 2008 2-21-08:- A Compelling Argument for Alternative Investments Home Page
The stock market today is entailing more risk, as the country faces an impending recession here in Q1 2008. Earnings are down in most sectors. Housing is in turmoil, and there is an overall bearish attitude towards these conventional investment options. Commodities, like gold, oil, and silver, are already at all time highs: therefore investors for the most part find these areas unattractive as well. Look around and you'll see many investment houses try to manufacture a sense of impending anxiety about leaving their money in a non-earning state. I think this has some tinges of bias, as they are also angling for commissions on stock sales. This would also apply to real estate agents: they have to have a long term positive sentiment towards housing...they don't have a choice!
So keep your money in the bank? At today's rates, now at or around 2.9%, this is the choice of many, but perhaps not the best utilization of these funds. Interest rate cuts by the FED have been futile: all they have done is punish savers. Banks are not lending, and credit card companies are raising their rates, not lowering them in many cases.
So that leaves 'alternative investments': Alternatives to what is considered a normal course of investment. This is an area of great interest to many people, as we've been led to believe real estate and the stock market are the only places to invest money. Alternative investments could be works of art, rare collectibles, new business startups, and other ground floor considerations. Although these types of investments carry a much greater degree of risk, the rewards are exponential.
One that is noteworthy is regional geo domain names that provide local content. Domain names have become an increasingly significant part of online marketing; specifically in the real estate field. Just in recent months, we have seen a surge in articles relating to the importance of domain names for small businesses.
Some points of note are:
1. This last Feb 2008 was the annual T.R.A.F.F.I.C convention at the Las Vegas Venitian: an exclusive engagement that requires an invitation and a registration cost of just under $2,000. It spanned 3 days and has grown every year as business people have realized the importance of domain names...not just in search engine placement, but in random 'type-ins' and traffic quality and significance. You can get more information on the event here : http://www.targetedtraffic.com
2. An Article in the Domain name journal DNJournal.com Interviewed the owner and CEO of Boulevards New Media, the company that operates losangeles.com, sanfrancisco.com, and many others. The article basically makes the argument that the traditional old media is being replaced by small scale new media.
3. Associated Cities completed their annual 2007 Geo Domain Expo.
4. Current articles discuss domains:
Wall Street Journal Article: Thanks to Web Ads, Some find New Money in Domain Names (Nov 17, 2005) Afilias: Sedo Closes Highest .INFO Aftermarket Sale (July 19th, 2007).
Yahoo Finance: Domain Name Game Still Going Strong: Tad Less Secretive (Feb 8, 2008).
The big issue at hand with domains is the growing costs associated with generating base web traffic. It's fine to have a website: but what good is it if no one visits? Therefore, individuals in the domain name investment business recognize the importance of search engine optimization, and domain name targeting. As more and more domain name endings enter the marketplace, and the internet becomes 'liberalized' to the extent that domain names besides .com become less meaningful, marketing websites will become more expensive. Therefore, the importance of multiple domains becomes apparent in order to capture as much traffic as possible and reducing dependence on search engines. This is why when you hear about a .com selling for several hundred thousand dollars, its because there is value in basic, generic terms.
There are many organizations, such as Associated Cities, and InternetCommerce.org, who equate domain names as 'internet real estate', and actively protect domain name investors from 'reverse hijackers'. Reverse hijackers are those that harass domain name holders, and file frivolous lawsuits against non trademark infringing domain holders, because they want to use the domain name for their own commercial or beneficial use. -comment-
